Cam-out is the name for what happens when a screwdriver bit slides up and out of the screw recess under torque. The bit climbs out of the recess as you apply force, instead of continuing to turn the screw. Most people have experienced this as a sudden slip that takes a chunk out of the surrounding timber — or leaves a rounded, unusable recess where a clean drive slot used to be.
In hand-driving, cam-out is irritating. In power-tool driving, it is more serious. An impact driver applies torque in sharp, rapid pulses. Each pulse gives the bit a moment to climb out of the recess if the geometry allows it. Once a screw head is stripped, you cannot drive or remove it cleanly. You either grind it out or leave it in place — neither is a good outcome mid-job.
The geometry of the drive recess is what determines how easily a bit cams out. This is the fundamental difference between Pozi and Torx. The two drives handle the forces in different ways, and that is why they perform differently under high torque.
Phillips drive was originally designed to cam out deliberately. In 1930s assembly-line manufacturing, this protected electric screwguns from overtightening. Pozi was developed to solve this problem for human-controlled fastening. Torx went further still, eliminating the angled drive faces that allow cam-out in the first place. Each generation of drive was an engineering improvement on the last.
Pozi drive — correctly called Pozidriv — is the dominant drive format for woodscrews in the UK and across most of continental Europe. It was developed as a direct improvement on Phillips drive. Where Phillips has four simple tapered wings, Pozi adds four extra radial ribs set at 45° between the main arms. Those additional ribs give the bit more contact points with the recess, which significantly reduces cam-out compared to Phillips.

A Pozi recess has four main cross slots plus four additional shallow ribs set at 45° between them. This creates eight contact points between the bit and the recess, compared to four in a Phillips drive. The extra engagement reduces the tendency of the bit to climb out of the recess under load. The result is better cam-out resistance than Phillips — but the drive flanks are still slightly tapered rather than truly perpendicular to the screw axis, which is why cam-out can still occur at very high torque.
The most common size for woodscrews is PZ2. This fits the vast majority of 3.5mm to 6mm diameter woodscrews — which covers almost everything in the TIMCO Classic and C2 Strong-Fix ranges available at JALFT. PZ1 is used on smaller screws; PZ3 on larger coach screws and some structural fixings.
Pozi drive is the right choice when you are working indoors, driving into manufactured board or softwood, using a drill-driver rather than a full-power impact driver, and you need to stop the screw precisely at flush. The PZ2 bit gives you good torque control at the moderate speeds these jobs need, and the wide availability of bits means you are never stuck on site without the right size.
Pozi also has a practical advantage on visible work. Because the recess has a slightly self-releasing geometry, it is somewhat easier to disengage the bit cleanly after the screw is seated — useful when you are working in tight spaces and need to pull the driver back without dragging the screw with it. Phillips and Pozi look almost identical until you try to drive one with the wrong bit. A Phillips bit used in a Pozi recess will cam out almost immediately and can damage the screw head before you have driven even a quarter turn. They are not interchangeable. A Pozi bit is marked PZ; a Phillips bit is marked PH. Always check the markings on both the bit and the screw pack before you start driving.
Torx — also called a star drive — uses a six-point star-shaped recess. The six lobes are designed with drive flanks that run almost parallel to the screw shank rather than angled away from it. This is the engineering difference that matters. In a cross-shaped drive like Phillips or Pozi, the tapered flanks create an upward force component under torque — that is what pushes the bit out of the recess as load increases. The most common Torx sizes for woodscrews are T20 and T25. The T20 is the standard for decking and outdoor timber screws in the 4.5mm–5.0mm diameter range. The T25 is used on larger structural screws and heavy timber fixings. Torx is the right choice whenever you are working with an impact driver at high torque, driving into dense or dry timber, or fixing into outdoor structural applications where getting a clean screw seat matters and stripped heads are not an option. Decking boards, treated timber joists, hardwood cladding, pergola frames, raised beds, and heavy landscape structures all call for Torx. The drive stays engaged through the full resistance of dense wood. The screw seats flush every time.
Torx is also the better choice when you are driving long screws — 80mm or longer — into resistant timber. One practical advantage of Torx that trade users mention often: with Torx, the bit actually grips the screw magnetically at the recess. This makes it far easier to start a screw in an awkward position — overhead, in tight corners, or one-handed on a scaffold — because the screw stays on the bit without falling off. Cabinet assembly uses manufactured board — chipboard, MDF, and melamine-faced board. This material is softer than solid timber. It does not create the high resistance that would push a Pozi bit to its cam-out limit. The moderate torque of a drill-driver on a mid-range clutch setting is all that is needed, and Pozi gives you precise control to stop at flush without over-driving. Decking is one of the clearest cases for Torx. You are driving 75mm to 100mm screws through a softwood board into a treated joist — often with an impact driver to keep up pace across a full deck. The combination of length, impact force, and treated timber resistance means cam-out is a real risk with Pozi. Dense hardwoods like iroko, ipe, and balau create far more resistance than treated softwood. Even with pre-drilling, the thread engagement torque is high. This is exactly the situation where Torx earns its place. A Pozi bit in dense hardwood at full impact driver speed can cam out before the head seats. A Torx bit holds through the full drive. Fixing cladding boards to treated battens is a case where either drive can work, but Torx is the better choice if you are using an impact driver. The screws need to penetrate the cladding board and bite into the batten, which means a reasonable amount of resistance even in softwood. Near board ends, where the risk of splitting means you need to control depth carefully, Torx gives you more confidence that the bit will not slip out of the recess at the wrong moment. Structural timber connections — joining joists to bearers, fixing ledger boards, assembling pergola frames — require long screws at full impact driver power into timber that may be dense, knotty, or heavily treated. For the heaviest connections, hex flange head structural screws give maximum torque transmission through a socket or impact wrench. Choosing the right drive is only half the job. You also need the right bit, and you need to match it to the right tool setting. A Torx screw driven with a worn bit, or a Pozi screw driven with the wrong impact setting, can strip just as easily as any other combination.
Using the wrong size bit is the most common cause of stripped screw heads — even when the drive type is correct. A PZ1 bit in a PZ2 recess sits loosely and cams out almost immediately. Standard screwdriver bits are made from hard, brittle steel. Under the rapid torque pulses of an impact driver, they can crack and shatter. Impact-rated bits use a torsion zone — a section of slightly softer steel in the shank that flexes under each pulse rather than fracturing. If you are using an impact driver for decking or structural work with Torx screws, use impact-rated Torx bits. They last significantly longer and do not fail mid-drive. The same applies to PZ2 bits if you are using an impact driver for interior work.
Whether you are using Pozi or Torx, set your tool's clutch or depth stop before you drive the first screw. Test on an offcut of the same material. The screw head should finish flush with or just below the surface — not proud, and not buried. In manufactured board, over-driving is easy because the material compresses around the head. With Torx in dense timber, under-driving is more common because the bit stays engaged and you may not notice when the head has seated. A proper depth setting prevents both problems and produces a consistent result across every screw in the job.

Phillips and Pozi look almost identical in the screw recess but are not compatible. A Phillips bit fits loosely in a Pozi recess and will cam out under very little torque, rounding the recess before the screw is even halfway home. Always check the marking on the bit. PZ = Pozi. One side effect of Torx's excellent cam-out resistance is that it does not give you the natural braking feedback that a Pozi bit provides. A Pozi bit will start to slip slightly as the screw approaches full depth — that slight resistance change tells your hand to stop. A Torx bit keeps driving. If you have not set a depth stop or clutch setting, Torx screws can bury themselves below the surface before you realise it. This compresses the timber fibres around the head, weakens the fixing, and leaves a dip that is difficult to fill flat. Always set your depth stop or test clutch setting on an offcut before driving Torx screws into any material.
Pozi handles moderate torque well. It is not designed for a full-power impact driver driving into dense hardwood or very dry treated timber. In those conditions, the tapered flanks of the Pozi recess allow cam-out under the rapid torque pulses of an impact driver. The result is a stripped head before the screw is fully seated. If you are using an impact driver and working in dense or resistant timber, specify Torx. The bit will stay engaged and the screw will seat cleanly.
Torx is better at handling the torque of driving into hardwood than Pozi. But it is not a substitute for pre-drilling. Hardwood is too dense for any woodscrew to self-start reliably without a pilot hole. Driving without one risks splitting the board, snapping the screw shank, or stripping the drive recess as the screw fights the timber. Pre-drill a pilot hole around two thirds of the screw's core diameter in hardwood, and always pre-drill within 25mm of any board end in any timber — regardless of drive type.
When you are working with Torx screws on a long run of decking or cladding boards, keep a spare bit in your pocket. Torx bits last longer than Pozi under impact use, but they do wear eventually. A worn Torx bit is almost as bad as a worn Pozi bit — the rounded lobes start to allow cam-out. Check the bit after every hundred or so screws on a long job. A fresh bit costs pennies. A stripped decking screw in a board you have already sanded and oiled costs far more.
