Fixing Lengths and Pack Sizes

Choose a fixing length based on the thickness of your insulation board. The fixing must pass through the full board depth and embed securely into the substrate behind. A minimum embedment depth into the substrate is required for safe load transfer. Always check the individual product page for technical data.

All fixings are 8.0mm in diameter. Embedment depth requirements vary by substrate. Always refer to the TIMCO technical data sheet before specifying fixings for structural or external wall insulation (EWI) systems.

How to Choose the Right Insulation Fixing

Plastic Insulation Fixings vs Metal Insulation Fixings

Both types secure insulation boards to masonry and concrete. They work in a similar way. The key differences are load capacity, thermal performance, and application.

Plastic insulation fixings are lightweight and non-corrosive. They do not rust. The plastic body limits heat transfer through the fixing point. This matters in external wall insulation systems where thermal bridging can reduce overall U-value performance. They suit low to medium load applications on standard masonry walls.

Metal insulation fixings offer higher pull-out strength. They are suited to heavier insulation boards, taller buildings, or sites with higher wind exposure. The zinc coating gives corrosion protection. Metal fixings are often used where greater mechanical load resistance is needed, such as on multi-storey external wall insulation projects.

What Are Insulation Discs and Stress Plates For?

Insulation discs and stress plates sit on the face of the insulation board. The fixing passes through the disc and into the wall. The disc spreads the clamping load over a wider area.

Without a disc, a standard fixing head can pull through softer insulation materials under load. This is especially a risk with mineral wool and lower-density EPS boards. A 70mm metal insulation disc gives a much larger bearing surface. The oval 82 x 40mm stress plate suits tighter spaces or board joints where a round disc would not sit well.

Always check whether discs are needed for your specific insulation board type and substrate. Heavier boards and windier locations generally require more fixing points per square metre and larger disc coverage.
