Washers for Trade, Construction and DIY
The wrong washer can cause a bolt to pull through, a surface to crack, or a joint to fail over time. This collection brings together over 140 washer products from TIMCO. Penny washers, square plate washers, Form A, B and C flat washers, spring washers, bonded washers and more. Carbon steel and A2 stainless steel options are available across a wide range of bolt sizes from M5 to M24.
The Right Washer for Every Fixing Job
A washer sits between a bolt head or nut and the surface being fixed. It spreads the load. Without one, the fastener can dig in, damage the material, or work loose over time.
Different jobs need different washers. A standard flat washer suits general bolted connections. A penny washer spreads load over a much wider area. A square plate washer works well where timber or soft materials need extra support. A spring washer adds resistance to loosening in vibrating joints.
All products are from TIMCO. Most are available in packs of 10, 20, 30, 60 or 100 pieces. Mixed trays are also available for workshop stock or trade use.
Types of Washers
Use the product type filter to find the right washer for your job. Here is a summary of what each type does.
Penny Washers
Also called repair washers, penny washers have a much wider outer diameter than a standard flat washer. They spread clamping force over a larger area. Useful where bolt holes are oversized, materials are soft, or you need extra bearing surface. Available in carbon steel with zinc finish or A2 stainless steel. Bolt sizes from M5 to M12 are available. To DIN9054.
Square Plate Washers
Square plate washers offer a large, flat bearing area in a square shape. They are suited to structural timber connections, post bases, hold-down bolts and similar fixings where pull-through is a concern. Available in carbon steel with zinc finish. Sizes include M8, M10 and M12 holes with 40x40mm and 50x50mm plates at 3mm or 5mm thickness.
Form A Flat Washers
Form A washers are standard metric flat washers to DIN125-A. They are the most commonly used washer for general bolted joints. Available in carbon steel with zinc finish or A2 stainless steel. Bolt sizes from M5 to M24 are covered within the range.
Form B and Form C Washers
Form B and Form C are larger outer-diameter variants of the standard metric flat washer. Form B has a wider outer diameter than Form A. Form C is wider still. Both are available in carbon steel with zinc and clear Cr3 finish across a selection of bolt sizes.
Spring Washers
Split spring washers are used under nuts and bolt heads where vibration could cause loosening. The split ring bites into the mating surfaces to resist rotation. Available in carbon steel with zinc finish across a selection of metric sizes.
Bonded Washers
Bonded washers combine a metal body with a rubber or fibre sealing element. They are used with roofing and cladding screws to seal around the fixing point. Check individual product pages for the exact sealing material and screw compatibility.
BAZ Washers
BAZ washers are thin-profile large-diameter washers available in A2 stainless steel. Used in specific fixing tasks where a wide seating surface is required. Available in 25mm size.
Washer Kits and Mixed Trays
Several assorted kits are available. These include a tap washer repair tray, a flat washer kit and combined set screw, nut and washer trays in both zinc and A2 stainless steel. Useful for workshop stock or trade vans.
Carbon Steel or Stainless Steel?
Most washers are carbon steel with a zinc and clear Cr3 finish. This gives reasonable corrosion resistance for indoor and sheltered use. The Cr3 coating is a trivalent chromium passivate.
A2-304 austenitic stainless steel options are available for penny washers and Form A flat washers. These are suited to external or damp environments where a zinc-plated carbon steel washer would not last as well.
A small number of products use hot dipped galvanised or standard galvanised finishes. One aluminium washer is also available. Check the individual product specification before ordering if the finish matters for your job.
Quick guide: Use carbon steel with zinc finish for indoor, dry or sheltered fixings. Choose A2 stainless steel for external work, damp conditions or where the washer will be exposed to the weather.
Available Bolt Sizes and Dimensions
Metric bolt sizes from M5 through to M24. Not every washer type is available in every size. Use the filters to find what is available for your bolt size.
| Washer Type | Bolt Sizes Available | Material Options |
|---|---|---|
| Penny / Repair Washers (DIN9054) | M5, M6, M8, M10, M12 | Carbon Steel (Zinc), A2 Stainless |
| Form A Flat Washers (DIN125-A) | M5 to M24 | Carbon Steel (Zinc), A2 Stainless |
| Form B Washers | Selected metric sizes | Carbon Steel (Zinc & Clear Cr3) |
| Form C Washers | Selected metric sizes | Carbon Steel (Zinc & Clear Cr3) |
| Square Plate Washers | M8, M10, M12 | Carbon Steel (Zinc & Clear Cr3) |
| Spring Washers | Selected metric sizes | Carbon Steel (Zinc & Clear Cr3) |
| BAZ Washers | 25mm | A2 Stainless Steel |
Square plate washer dimensions range from 40x40mm up to 50x50mm. Plate thickness is either 3mm or 5mm depending on the product. Always check the individual product page for exact dimensions before ordering.
How to Choose the Right Washer
Start with your bolt size. This narrows the range straight away. Then think about what the washer needs to do.
General bolted joints
A Form A flat washer is the standard choice. It covers most everyday fixing tasks. Choose zinc carbon steel for dry indoor work. Choose A2 stainless for outdoor or damp conditions.
Oversized holes or soft materials
If the hole is larger than the bolt or the material is soft, a penny washer gives a wider bearing surface. The larger outer diameter reduces the risk of the bolt head pulling through.
Structural timber connections
Square plate washers are commonly used with hold-down bolts in timber construction. The square plate spreads load across a wider area of the timber surface.
Vibrating joints
Where a bolted connection is subject to vibration or movement, a spring washer adds resistance to loosening. Fit it between the nut and the standard flat washer.
Roofing and sheet fixings
Bonded washers seal around the fastener to stop water ingress. They are designed for use with roofing screws. Check individual product descriptions for exact fixing compatibility.
Workshop or van stock
Mixed trays and kits cover a range of common sizes. Practical for trade use when you need a selection of bolt washers, flat washers and tap washers to hand without ordering individual packs.
Penny Washers vs Flat Washers vs Square Plate Washers
These three types are often confused. Here is how they differ.
A flat washer (Form A, B or C) has a standard circular shape with a defined inner and outer diameter to a metric DIN standard. The outer diameter is relatively close to the bolt size.
A penny washer (DIN9054) has a much larger outer diameter relative to its hole size. It is designed to spread load over a wide area. The name comes from the resemblance to an old penny coin. They are also called repair washers because they are used to reinforce a damaged or oversized hole.
A square plate washer has a square body rather than a round one. This gives a larger clamping surface in a compact shape. Useful in corners, against timber, or where a round washer would not sit well.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a penny washer used for?
A penny washer spreads the clamping load over a wider area. It is used when the hole is oversized, the material is soft, or you need more bearing surface than a standard flat washer provides.
What is the difference between Form A, B and C washers?
They are all standard metric flat washers. Form A has the smallest outer diameter. Form B is wider. Form C is wider still. All three sit to DIN standards. The right choice depends on the bearing area needed for your fixing.
Are square plate washers suitable for timber?
Yes. Square plate washers are commonly used in structural timber fixing tasks where a larger bearing surface is needed. They help spread load and reduce pull-through risk.
Which washers are available in stainless steel?
Penny washers and Form A flat washers are available in A2-304 stainless steel. These are suited to external or damp environments. Most other washer types are carbon steel with a zinc and clear Cr3 finish.
What bolt sizes do the washers fit?
The range covers M5 through to M24. Not every washer type is available in every size. Use the bolt size filter or check individual product pages to confirm what is available for your fixing.
What are bonded washers used for?
Bonded washers combine a metal body with a rubber or fibre sealing element. They are designed to seal around roofing and sheet-metal screws to prevent water ingress at the fixing point.
Can I buy washers in small quantities?
Yes. Many products are available in packs of 10. Larger packs of 20, 30, 60 or 100 pieces are also available depending on the product. Mixed trays are available for a variety of types and sizes.
Do I need a washer under a nut and under a bolt head?
This depends on the joint and the material. In many structural or timber tasks, washers are used under both the bolt head and the nut. Check the fixing specification or manufacturer guidance for your particular application.
Find the Right Washer for Your Project
Use the filters to narrow by product type, material, bolt size and finish. Check individual product pages for exact dimensions and pack quantities before ordering.
Whether you need penny washers for repair work, square plate washers for structural timber, Form A flat washers for general bolted joints, or bonded washers for roofing fixings, the range covers a practical selection of sizes and materials for trade and site use.
