Cavity Wall Fixings That Actually Hold

Standard wall plugs will not grip in hollow walls. You need the right cavity wall fixing. Covers metal cavity anchors, spring toggles, Zip-Fix anchors, speed plugs and plasterboard fixings from TIMCO. Use them for fixing to plasterboard, drywall, hollow concrete block and dry-lined walls. Suitable for trade and DIY use across the UK.

The Right Fixing for Hollow Walls

Cavity walls are hollow. There is no solid backing for a standard plug. Push one in and it spins. The screw grips nothing. Your shelf, bracket or fitting will pull clean out of the wall.

Cavity wall fixings solve this problem. They expand or toggle behind the board surface. This spreads the load across the back of the wall. The fixing grips tightly and stays put.

JALFT brings together the most useful fixings for hollow walls and plasterboard. All products are from TIMCO. They are used by trades across the UK on domestic and commercial sites every day.

Quick tip: Always check your board thickness before ordering. Cavity anchors come in different grip ranges. Using the wrong size means the anchor will not expand properly behind the board. Check individual product pages for grip board thickness details.

Types of Cavity Wall Fixings

Different hollow wall jobs need different fixings. Here is what each type does and when to use it.

Metal Cavity Anchors

Also called hollow wall anchors or molly bolts. You drill a hole and push the anchor in. Tighten the screw and the arms fold open behind the board. This pulls the anchor tight against the back of the plasterboard. The screw can then be removed and refitted. Good for radiators, rails, shelving and brackets. Available in zinc-plated steel. Sizes from M4 to M6 with different grip ranges to suit single and double plasterboard.

Spring Toggle Fixings

Spring toggles are heavy-duty cavity fixings. The spring-loaded wings fold flat for insertion. Once through the hole they spring open wide behind the wall. This spreads the load over a large area. Ideal for heavier loads in hollow walls and stud partitions. Well suited to overhead ceiling fixings where load distribution matters most.

Zip-Fix Cavity Wall Anchors

The TIMCO Zip-Fix is a heavy-duty fixing for plasterboard, hollow concrete blocks, cavity walls and ceilings. Once installed the nylon arms are removed. This leaves an all-steel, non-flammable fixing. It meets BS 7671 18th edition requirements for fire resistance. Supplied with both 40mm and 60mm screws. Rapid installation with no setting tool required.

Plasterboard Speed Plugs

Speed plugs are a fast solution for lighter cavity wall fixing tasks. They can be tapped or screwed directly into plasterboard without pre-drilling in many cases. Suitable for pictures, mirrors, curtain rail brackets and other lighter wall-mounted items. A quick and cost-effective option when load demands are low.

Screw-In Plasterboard Anchors

Self-drilling plasterboard anchors thread directly into the board. No pilot hole is needed in many cases. The wide thread grips the plasterboard material. These are a clean and quick solution for light to medium loads. Common for fixing hooks, small shelves and internal fittings to stud walls and dry-lined surfaces.

Cavity Anchor Setting Tool

The TIMCO hollow wall anchor setting tool expands metal cavity anchors without damaging the board. It pulls the anchor legs tight behind the plasterboard. This gives a stronger, more consistent result than tightening by hand. Compatible with M4, M5 and M6 metal cavity anchors. Essential for high-volume or professional site use.

Cavity Fixing Quick Reference

Use this table to match the fixing type to your job and load level. Always check the individual product page for exact load ratings and board thickness compatibility before ordering.

Fixing Type Best For Typical Load Setting Method
Metal Cavity Anchor (M4-M6) Radiators, rails, shelves, brackets Up to 22kg per fixing Screwdriver or setting tool
Spring Toggle Heavy loads, overhead fixings, stud walls Medium to heavy Hand screw
Zip-Fix Cavity Anchor (M6) Plasterboard, hollow block, ceilings Heavy duty Zip and fix, no tool
Speed Plug / Screw Anchor Mirrors, curtain rails, light shelves Light to medium Screwdriver only
Setting Tool Multiple metal anchor installations N/A (tool only) Hand-operated pull tool

Load figures are a general guide only. Actual load capacity depends on board thickness, wall condition and installation quality. Always follow product guidelines for structural or safety-critical fixings.

How Do Cavity Wall Fixings Work?

Cavity fixings work by gripping the back of the board surface. A standard wall plug expands inside a solid hole. There is no solid material in a cavity wall for it to grip. The plug spins and fails.

Cavity anchors are different. The metal arms or wings pass through the hole. They open up behind the board. When you tighten the screw, the arms pull tight against the inner face of the plasterboard. The fixing is now clamped from both sides. It cannot pull through.

Spring toggles work on the same principle. The spring-loaded wings collapse for insertion and then spring open on the other side. The wide spread of the wings means a larger bearing area. This is why toggles suit heavier loads and ceiling applications.

The Zip-Fix uses nylon arms to guide the anchor into position. Once set, the nylon arms are removed. What remains is an all-steel fixing in the wall. This makes it suitable where fire resistance is required, including wiring and electrical installations under BS 7671 18th edition.

How to Choose the Best Fixings for Cavity Walls

Start with the weight of what you are fixing. Then check your board thickness. These two factors narrow the choice quickly.

Light loads (up to 10kg)

Pictures, small shelves, hooks and coat rails. Speed plugs and screw-in plasterboard anchors work well here. Fast to install. No specialist tool needed for most applications.

Medium loads (10kg to 22kg)

Curtain rails, bathroom fittings, towel rails and wall cabinets. Metal cavity anchors are the right choice. Use the correct grip range for your board thickness. A setting tool gives a more consistent result on multiple fixings.

Heavy loads (22kg and above)

TV brackets, radiators, kitchen cabinets and handrails. Use heavy-duty cavity wall fixings such as spring toggles or Zip-Fix anchors. Spread the load across multiple fixing points where possible. Check load ratings on individual product pages.

Hollow concrete block

Not all cavity fixings work in hollow block. The Zip-Fix is specifically rated for hollow concrete block as well as plasterboard and cavity walls. Check the product description before use in block construction.

Double plasterboard walls

Some properties use two layers of plasterboard. The combined thickness may be 24mm or more. Make sure the anchor length covers the full board thickness. Check the grip range on the product page before ordering.

Fire-rated installations

Where fixings must meet fire resistance standards, use the Zip-Fix. Once the nylon arms are removed it becomes an all-steel, non-flammable fixing. It conforms to BS 7671 18th edition. Suitable for electrical wiring support in hollow walls and ceilings.

Common Uses for Hollow Wall Fixings

Cavity wall fixings are used across a wide range of domestic and commercial applications. Here are the most common ones.

Shelving and Storage

Wall-mounted shelves on plasterboard need cavity fixings. Metal anchors give a solid fixing point for shelf brackets. Use at least two fixings per bracket for stability.

Radiators and Plumbing

Radiator brackets carry significant weight and vibration. Metal cavity anchors rated to 22kg per fixing are suitable. Use the correct grip range for the board in your wall.

TV Brackets and AV Fixings

A wall-mounted TV needs secure fixings. Use heavy-duty cavity anchors or spring toggles. Spread the load across four or more fixing points where the bracket allows.

Curtain Rails and Blinds

Curtain rails take sideways and downward pull. Metal cavity anchors or screw-in anchors handle this well. Speed plugs work for lighter blinds and rail systems.

Kitchen Cabinets and Units

Wall cabinets need strong, reliable fixings. Use heavy-duty metal cavity anchors. Always follow the cabinet manufacturer's fixing guidance. Use at least two fixings per cabinet hanger.

Electrical and Ceiling Work

Wiring supports and ceiling fixtures in hollow construction need cavity fixings. The Zip-Fix meets BS 7671 fire resistance requirements. Use it where regulations require non-flammable support materials.

Trade tip: Always use the TIMCO hollow wall anchor setting tool when installing multiple metal cavity anchors on site. It prevents over-tightening and board damage. It also speeds up installation significantly. Each anchor is set consistently and reliably every time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cavity Wall Fixings

What are cavity wall fixings?

Cavity wall fixings are specialist anchors for hollow walls. They expand or toggle behind the board surface. This grips the back of the plasterboard or panel. Standard wall plugs will not hold in hollow walls because there is no solid material to grip.

What is the best fixing for cavity walls with heavy loads?

For heavy loads, use metal cavity anchors or spring toggles. The TIMCO Zip-Fix is also a heavy-duty option for plasterboard, hollow block and ceilings. Spread the load across multiple fixing points to reduce stress on each anchor.

Can I use cavity fixings in hollow concrete block?

Not all cavity fixings are rated for hollow block. The TIMCO Zip-Fix is specifically approved for use in hollow concrete blocks as well as plasterboard and cavity walls. Always check the product description before use in block construction.

Do I need a setting tool to install cavity anchors?

Not always. Metal cavity anchors can be installed with a standard screwdriver. However, a setting tool gives a more consistent and reliable result. It also reduces the risk of damaging the plasterboard during installation. It is worth using on larger jobs.

What board thickness do cavity anchors fit?

Different anchor sizes cover different grip ranges. TIMCO metal cavity anchors cover board thicknesses from around 6mm up to 32mm depending on the size selected. Check the grip board specification on the individual product page before ordering.

Are Zip-Fix cavity anchors fire rated?

Yes. Once the nylon installation arms are removed, the Zip-Fix becomes an all-steel, non-flammable fixing. It conforms to BS 7671 18th edition. This makes it suitable for electrical wiring support in hollow walls and ceilings where fire resistance is required.

How many cavity fixings do I need per shelf bracket?

Use at least two fixings per bracket. For heavier shelving or items with sideways pull, use more fixing points. Always follow the bracket manufacturer's guidance. Spreading the load reduces stress on each individual fixing.
