Premium Countersunk Gold Woodscrews

A complete range of premium woodscrews available in every diameter from 3mm to 8mm and in a wide selection of lengths. Stocked in the UK and available for next-day delivery to trade and self-builders nationwide.

The Right Woodscrew Diameter for Every Application

Choosing the correct diameter is just as important as choosing the correct length when selecting premium woodscrews. An undersized screw will not provide adequate holding strength in load-bearing joints; an oversized screw will split the workpiece or cause the timber to fail around the fixing. This collection covers every diameter in common use across joinery, construction, cabinetry and general woodworking, from fine 3mm screws for delicate trim work right through to heavy-duty 8mm screws for structural applications.

Every screw in this range is manufactured to consistent standards, with thread geometry and head profiles selected for reliable performance in both softwood and hardwood. Whether you are fixing skirting boards, assembling stud partitions, hanging doors or building joinery furniture, the correct diameter and length combination is available in this collection.

Premium Woodscrews by Diameter

Our premium woodscrews are organised by diameter so you can select the correct gauge for the timber section and load requirements of your project. Each size below links directly to the relevant products in the range.

3mm Screws

The finest gauge in our woodscrew range, suited to thin sheet materials, MDF edge strips, decorative trim and small-section hardwood components. Our 3mm screws are particularly useful where a standard gauge would risk splitting the workpiece, such as in slender battens, thin ply panels or delicate architrave sections.

3.5mm Screws

A versatile intermediate gauge well suited to internal joinery, cabinet carcass assembly, light shelving and fixing timber mouldings. Our 3.5mm screws provide noticeably greater holding strength than a 3mm fixing while remaining slim enough to use in timber sections where splitting is a concern.

4mm Screws

One of the most widely used diameters across general woodworking and site joinery. Our 4mm screws are the standard choice for fixing skirting boards, architraves, door linings and internal stud work, as well as kitchen unit carcasses and fitted furniture carcase construction.

4.5mm Screws

A step up in holding power from the 4mm gauge, making our 4.5mm screws a practical choice for partition framing, noggin fixing and heavier internal joinery where additional pull-out resistance is needed without moving to a full 5mm diameter. Also commonly used for fixing into pre-drilled hardwood where thread engagement is critical.

5mm Screws

The preferred diameter for structural timber connections in first-fix carpentry, including floor joist hangers, stud-to-plate fixings and roof batten work. Our 5mm screws deliver the combination of diameter, thread engagement and shear resistance required in applications where the fixing is under sustained load.

6mm Screws

A heavy-gauge woodscrew suited to large-section structural joinery, post-and-beam connections and where significant pull-out or shear forces are present. Our 6mm screws are also the appropriate choice when fixing through thick sheet materials into solid timber members, such as in staircase construction or heavy shelving.

8mm Screws

The largest diameter in our standard woodscrew range and intended for heavy structural applications. Our 8mm screws are used in large-section beam connections, engineered timber frames, heavy external structures and applications where maximum pull-out resistance is required from a single fixing point. Pre-drilling is recommended in most hardwood species at this diameter.

Choosing the Correct Woodscrew Diameter

As a practical guide, the diameter of the screw shank should be approximately one-tenth of the total screw length for general woodworking applications. In practice, most joiners and carpenters work from the material being fixed: for thin sheet materials and small-section softwood, 3mm screws or 3.5mm screws are appropriate. For general internal joinery and carcass work, 4mm screws and 4.5mm screws cover the majority of requirements. For structural first-fix carpentry and external joinery, 5mm screws and 6mm screws provide the holding strength required. For the heaviest structural connections, 8mm screws deliver maximum pull-out resistance.

When fixing into end grain, always select one diameter size larger than you would use for face-grain fixing, as end-grain pull-out strength is significantly lower in most timber species. Pre-drilling a pilot hole to approximately 70% of the shank diameter will prevent splitting in both softwood and hardwood across all the gauges in this range.

Head Types and Drive Formats

Our premium woodscrews are available in the head profiles and drive formats most commonly used in UK joinery and construction. Countersunk heads are the standard choice for most applications, sitting flush with the timber surface when fully driven and allowing a clean finish with or without a wood filler plug. Raised countersunk heads are used where a decorative head is visible in the finished work. Pan heads are suited to fixing hardware, brackets and ironmongery where a flush finish is not required.

Drive formats across the range include Pozi, Torx and, on larger structural gauges, hex flange. Torx drive is increasingly specified on professional sites for its superior resistance to cam-out under high torque, particularly when driving 5mm screws, 6mm screws and 8mm screws with an impact driver into dense or knotty timber.

Thread and Point Design: Every woodscrew in our premium range features a sharp cutting point and optimised thread pitch for the diameter. Coarse threads are used on screws intended for softwood and sheet materials to maximise pull-out resistance. Finer thread pitches are available on larger diameters for use in hardwood, where a coarser thread can cause splitting or distortion of the surrounding fibre.

Coatings, Materials and Corrosion Resistance

The correct coating for a premium woodscrew depends on the application environment and the timber treatment used. Our range includes bright zinc plated screws for internal dry applications, yellow passivated screws for general construction use, and fully corrosion-resistant coatings for external joinery and applications involving treated or preservative-impregnated timber.

For external joinery, cladding, external door frames and any application where the screw will be exposed to moisture, always select a corrosion-resistant option. Bright zinc plate is not adequate for external use and will cause staining of the timber surface as the coating degrades. If you are fixing into pressure-treated or tanalised timber at any diameter from 3mm screws through to 8mm screws, select a screw with a coating rated for contact with timber preservatives.
