Laying the boards is the satisfying part — the deck finally appears. But it's also where small, repeated decisions either compound into a flat, even, professional surface or leave you with a deck that cups, ponds, gaps unevenly, or develops a sagging board end you trip on. The difference isn't skill so much as method: the right gaps, the right fixing pattern, end joins that land where they should, and a few minutes of preparation that most people skip.

This guide assumes your subframe is already built, level, square and ready (if it isn't, start with our subframe guide first). Boards move. The whole technique is about giving them room to.

Timber and composite both expand and contract with moisture and temperature. Almost every board-laying problem — buckling, ponding, splitting, gaps opening unevenly — comes from not allowing for that movement, or from fixing the boards in a way that fights it. Consistent gaps and the correct fixing pattern are how you work with the material instead of against it.


Before You Start — Subframe, Acclimatising, and Planning

Three things should be settled before the first board goes down: the subframe is genuinely ready, the boards have acclimatised, and you've planned the layout. Skip any of these and you'll be correcting it once boards are already screwed down — the hardest time to fix anything.

The boards can only ever be as flat and true as the frame beneath them. Before laying, confirm the subframe is square, that the joist tops sit in one flat plane, that there's a slight fall to shed water, and that joist spacing suits your board type and direction (400mm for straight softwood, closer for diagonal and composite). Ideally the joist tops are already taped and any cut timber treated. A few minutes checking now saves lifting boards later.

Acclimatise the boards on site
Especially important for composite — and it's free
Prep

Boards delivered from a warm warehouse or a cold yard need time to settle to the conditions where they'll live. Lay them out flat and supported, off the ground, in the area they'll be installed, for a day or two before fixing — a common guide is at least 48 hours. This is particularly important for composite, which expands and contracts with temperature: a board fixed straight off a hot delivery van will contract and pull its gaps open, or worse. Always follow the board manufacturer's acclimatisation instructions where given.

For composite decking, acclimatising and respecting the manufacturer's expansion gaps are not optional. Composite moves significantly with temperature, and skipping these steps is the leading cause of buckled or gapped composite decks.

Plan the layout and your starting edge

Planning

Boards run at right angles to the joists. Decide which way they'll run, where you'll start (usually the straightest, most visible edge — often against the house), and how the widths will work out so you don't finish on an awkward thin sliver. Dry-lay or measure across the deck: divide the width by the board width plus its gap to see how many boards you need and how wide the final board will be. If the last board would be a narrow strip, you can rip a little off the first board to balance it. Sort through the boards too, setting aside the best for the most visible runs and any badly bowed ones for short cuts.

One layout decision worth making now: which face goes up. Many decking boards have a grooved or reeded face and a smooth face. The grooves were once thought to add grip, but they can trap water and dirt and become slippery, so a lot of installers and manufacturers now recommend laying the smooth side up. Check what your board's maker advises, and pick one orientation for the whole deck so it looks consistent.


Tools and Materials for Laying Boards

You don't need a vast kit to lay boards well, but a few specific items — consistent spacers and the right screws above all — make the difference between a tidy job and a frustrating one.

For materials: your decking boards, correctly specified decking screws (length and coating to suit your boards — see our decking screw guide), fascia/edging boards to finish, and end-grain preserver for cuts. For tools: a drill/driver plus an impact driver for the screws, a circular saw or jigsaw for cutting, a tape, pencil and set square, a chalk line and string line to keep runs straight, a pilot/countersink bit (essential for hardwood), consistent spacers for the gaps, and knee pads. Composite systems often come with their own colour-matched screws or hidden clips — use what the manufacturer specifies.

Trade Rule

Use a dedicated spacer for the board gaps rather than eyeballing them or relying on a pencil that changes. Offcuts of the right thickness, a deck-spacing tool, or even matched plastic spacers all work — what matters is that every gap is set with the same object so the lines stay parallel right across the deck. Inconsistent gaps are the most visible giveaway of a rushed job.


Expansion Gaps — The Figures That Matter

Gaps do two jobs: they let rainwater drain through rather than pool on the surface, and they give the boards room to expand without buckling. There are two gaps to think about — the gap between boards along their length, and the gap at the board ends — plus a gap around the perimeter against walls and fixed objects.

Always build to the figures in your board's installation guide rather than to a generic number; composite's larger thermal movement makes this critical.
Match the gap to the board's moisture state

The right timber gap depends on how wet the boards are when you lay them. Wet or freshly pressure-treated boards shrink as they dry, so a gap set too wide on wet boards becomes a wider gap later. Dry or kiln-dried boards have already done most of their shrinking, so they're laid at the fuller spacing. If you're unsure, err toward the tighter end for visibly damp boards and the fuller end for dry ones — and keep every gap consistent.

With the frame ready, the boards acclimatised and the layout planned, the laying itself is a steady rhythm: position, check straight, fix, space, repeat — checking alignment every few boards so small drifts never become a visible wedge.

Step 1 — Lay and align the first board
The reference for everything that follows
First Board

Lay the first board along your starting edge, leaving the small perimeter gap if it's against a wall. Get it dead straight — a string line or chalk line along its outer edge is worth the effort, because every other board references off this one. If you're starting against the house, keep the board off the wall by your perimeter gap so it can move and so water can't sit against the building. Once you're happy it's straight and correctly positioned, it's ready to fix.

Fixing

Fix each board into every joist it crosses. Boards over 120mm wide take two screws per joist — this stops the board cupping as it dries; narrower boards may take one. Keep screws back at least 20mm from board ends and a sensible distance in from the edges so you don't split the timber. In hardwood, pilot drill and countersink every fixing; in softwood, pilot at least the board ends. Drive heads flush or just below the surface — proud heads catch feet, overdriven heads tear the timber. Aim for a neat, aligned row of screws; it's a detail people notice.

For composite boards, follow the maker's fixing method exactly — many use hidden clips on grooved profiles or specific surface screws on solid profiles. Using the wrong fixing can crack the board and void the warranty.

Step 3 — Space and continue, checking as you go

Run

Place your spacers against the fixed board and butt the next board up to them, so the gap is identical down the whole length, then fix. Work across the deck this way. Every three or four boards, measure from a fixed reference (the starting edge or the far frame) at both ends of the run to confirm the boards are staying parallel. If a slightly bowed board is fighting you, a clamp or a pry bar against a temporary block lets you ease it to the right gap while you drive the first screws. Catching drift early — a millimetre here and there — keeps the final boards from ending up wedge-shaped.

Step 4 — The final board

The last board frequently needs ripping down to width to fit the remaining space and leave a tidy perimeter gap. Measure the gap at several points (the deck may be very slightly out), mark the board, and rip it cleanly with a circular saw against a straightedge. Treat the freshly cut edge with preserver before fixing. If you balanced the layout at the planning stage, this final board should be a sensible width rather than a fragile sliver.


Board End Joins and Staggering

When a deck is wider than a single board length, boards have to join end to end. How you handle those joins affects both how strong the deck is and how it looks. Two rules cover it: every join must be supported, and joins must be staggered.

A board end that isn't sitting on a joist has nothing holding it down — it will lift, sag, or spring underfoot, and becomes a trip point. Every join must fall over a joist. Because two board ends need to share that joist (each needs its own screws), the best practice is a wider bearing at join lines: a double joist or an extra noggin so each board end gets solid timber to fix into without the two fixings crowding each other. Plan join positions when you set out the frame, not when you reach them with a board.

Don't line all the joins up on the same joist — a continuous join line is both weaker and visually jarring, drawing the eye straight to it. Instead, stagger the joins like brickwork, so each row's join falls at a different point along the deck. This spreads the joins across the structure and gives a much cleaner, more deliberate appearance. Mixing a couple of board lengths, or cutting boards to planned lengths, lets you control where each join lands so the stagger looks even rather than random.

Cutting, Trimming, and Finishing

With the field of boards down, a tidy finish comes from trimming the edges clean, protecting every cut, dressing the edges with fascia boards, and treating the timber once it's ready.

A neat trick for a perfectly straight edge: let the boards run long past the deck edge as you lay them, then snap a single chalk line across all the overhanging ends and cut them in one pass with a circular saw against a clamped straightedge. This gives a crisp, continuous edge far straighter than cutting each board to length individually. Set the saw depth to just clear the board so you don't bite into the frame below.

Pressure treatment only protects the original surface, so brush end-grain preserver onto every cut edge and end before it's exposed to weather. Then fit fascia (edging) boards around the perimeter to hide the cut board ends and the frame, giving the deck a finished, built-in look and shielding the frame timber from direct rain. Fix fascia with the same corrosion-protected screws used elsewhere.

New timber boards usually benefit from a period to weather and dry out before a surface treatment is applied — a freshly treated or damp board won't take oil or stain properly. Once the boards have settled, a quality decking oil or stain feeds the timber and helps it resist water and UV; reapply periodically as part of maintenance. Composite boards don't need oiling or staining at all — a wash down is generally all they require. Always follow the product's guidance on timing and conditions for the best result.

Boards laid tight together with no gap can't drain and have nowhere to expand, so water pools and the deck can buckle — a particular risk with composite. Gaps that wander because they were eyeballed leave the surface looking untidy. Use a consistent spacer for every gap, match the gap to the board's moisture state for timber, and follow the manufacturer's figures for composite. Getting the gap right is the single biggest factor in how the finished surface performs and looks.

An end join floating between joists, or a board overhanging too far past the last joist, has nothing holding it flat — it bounces, droops over time, and lifts at the corner. Both steps cost almost nothing and prevent problems that are hard to undo later.
