Why Timber Splits When You Drive a Screw

When you drive a woodscrew without a pilot hole, the screw has to force its way through the timber. It pushes the wood fibres apart to make space for itself. In softwood, those fibres can sometimes flex and move without cracking. In hardwood, they resist. The pressure builds up until the wood gives way, usually in a split that runs along the grain towards the nearest edge.

The risk is highest near the end or edge of a board. There is less surrounding material to absorb the force, so it has nowhere to go except outward. The result is a crack that can ruin the workpiece entirely.

A pilot hole removes just enough material for the screw's core to enter cleanly. The threads still cut into the surrounding wood and grip firmly. But the core does not have to push anything out of the way, so the outward pressure disappears. The joint ends up tighter, cleaner and stronger.

The screw is not the only cause

The split happens because of outward pressure on the fibres, not just the sharpness or size of the screw tip. Even a high-quality premium woodscrew with a twin-cut thread will split dense or edge-grained timber if no pilot hole is drilled. The technique matters as much as the screw itself.


Choosing the Right Drill Bit Size for a Pilot Hole

This is the part that trips up most DIYers. The pilot hole must be sized to match the core of the screw, not the full shank diameter with threads included. If you match the outer thread diameter, the hole is too big and the threads have nothing to grip. If you go too small, the pressure returns and the wood splits anyway.

A practical starting rule is to hold the drill bit up in front of the screw and look through the bit at the screw. You should be able to see the threads either side of the bit, but the bit should cover the core. That gives you a reliable visual check before you commit to drilling.

The Core Rule
Match the pilot bit to the core of the screw (the shaft between the threads), not the full outer diameter. The threads must still bite into timber on both sides of the hole.

The 70% Shank Rule

A working rule used in UK joinery is to drill a pilot hole at roughly 70% of the shank diameter in softwood. For hardwood, move closer to 75–80% because the denser fibres need more clearance to avoid cracking. For MDF or plywood, aim for around 70–75%.

The timber species affects how you approach pilot holes more than most DIYers expect. Softwoods like pine, spruce and redwood are more forgiving. Their fibres compress and move slightly under pressure. Hardwoods like oak, ash and beech resist compression. They crack rather than flex.

Driving a screw within 20–25 mm of the end or edge of any board, in any timber type, significantly increases the risk of splitting. Always pre-drill in these positions, and consider increasing the pilot hole size slightly to give the fibres more room.


How to Pre-Drill a Pilot Hole: Step by Step

Follow these six steps in order. Each one builds on the last. Skipping steps, especially marking and securing, is where most splits and mistakes happen.

Clamp the workpiece to a bench or hold it firmly against a stable surface. If the board moves while you drill, the bit can angle sideways. That widens the hole unevenly and can crack the timber from the inside. A simple G-clamp or bench vice is enough for most DIY jobs. Never hold the timber with just your hand when drilling into it.

When to Add a Countersink

A pilot hole alone only prevents splitting. It does not make the screw head sit flush. If you are using a countersunk head woodscrew and you want a neat, flat finish, you need an additional countersink step.

A countersink bit is a tapered reaming tool that widens the top of the pilot hole into a cone shape. The screw head drops into that cone and sits level with the timber surface. Without it, the head sits proud, which looks untidy and can catch on anything passing over it.

When to countersink
Use a countersink when: (a) you want the head flush with the surface, (b) you want to fill over the head, or (c) you want to plug the hole with a timber plug for a clean finish.
When not to countersink
Skip the countersink for pan head screws (which are designed to sit proud), for hidden fixings behind panels, or where the screw drives into a rebate that already provides a recess.
Tip

Test the countersink depth on a scrap piece before committing to the workpiece. Lower the screw into the dry hole and check that the head sits level. It is easy to go too deep with a countersink bit, especially in softwood.


Pilot Holes vs Clearance Holes: What Is the Difference?

Many DIYers use the terms interchangeably, but they are two different holes with two different jobs. Understanding the difference leads to tighter, stronger joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I always need to pre-drill a pilot hole for a woodscrew?
Not always. In soft timber with small-diameter screws, driven well away from the edge, you can sometimes skip the pilot hole. But in hardwood, near the end or edge of a board, with larger screws, or in dry timber that is prone to splitting, a pilot hole is strongly recommended. When in doubt, pre-drill. It takes seconds and prevents expensive splits.
What happens if my pilot hole is too small?
