Walk into any builders' merchant and you will find screws at very different price points. Cheap screws do a job. Premium screws do a better job, more reliably, over a longer life. But what actually sets them apart?

Diameter is the first decision you make when picking a woodscrew. Get it wrong and the screw either has no grip or it splits the timber. The diameter refers to the outer width of the threaded shank, measured in millimetres.

End Grain Fixing

When fixing into end grain, always go one diameter size larger than you would for a face-grain fixing. End grain holds screws far less well, so a larger diameter compensates for the reduced thread engagement.


Choosing the Right Length

Length is just as important as diameter. A screw that is too short will pull out under load. One that is too long will poke through the back of the timber or hit a cavity.

The standard rule is simple. The screw should penetrate the receiving timber by at least twice the thickness of the piece being fixed. So if you are fixing a 15mm batten, at least 30mm of the screw should sit in the wall plug or backing timber.

For most general joinery, a screw length of two and a half to three times the thickness of the top material is a good starting point. This gives enough thread engagement in the base material while leaving a safety margin before you reach the far side.

When fixing skirting boards to a stud wall, measure the thickness of the plasterboard first. Your screw needs to pass through the board and reach the stud behind it with enough thread to grip firmly. A 4mm x 65mm screw is a common choice for this application in UK homes.

Head Types: Which Should You Use?

The head of a woodscrew does two things. It limits how deep the screw can go, and it determines the finish you get on the surface. Different head shapes are suited to different situations.

A countersunk head has a tapered underside that draws flush with the timber surface when driven fully home. This is the standard head type across joinery, carpentry, and general DIY. Once the screw is flush, you can fill over it with wood filler or a plug for a clean, paintable finish.

A pan head has a flat top and a slightly domed profile. It sits proud of the surface rather than flush. This makes it ideal for fixing hinges, brackets, ironmongery, and other hardware where the fixing point is visible and a recessed head is not needed or practical.

For the vast majority of domestic joinery and DIY, the countersunk head is the right choice. If you are unsure, it is almost certainly a countersunk you need.


Drive Formats: Pozi vs Torx

The drive format is the shape of the recess in the screw head that your bit fits into. It controls how well the bit stays in the screw and how much torque you can apply before the bit slips out. Getting this right matters especially when using a power drill or impact driver.

The star-shaped recess grips the bit so well that cam-out is almost eliminated, even when driving hard. Pressure-Treated Timber Warning

If you are fixing into pressure-treated or tanalised timber, check that your screw coating is compatible with the preservative used. Some preservative treatments are corrosive to standard zinc plate and will degrade the coating quickly. When in doubt, choose a screw with a higher corrosion rating or opt for stainless steel.


How to Drill a Pilot Hole Correctly

A pilot hole is a small guide hole drilled before you drive the screw. It does three things. It prevents the timber from splitting. It makes the screw easier to drive. And it guides the screw in straight so you get a clean, accurate fixing.

In softwood, many modern premium screws with sharp cutting points can be driven without a pilot hole. But in hardwood, near the edge of any timber, or when using screws of 5mm diameter and above, a pilot hole is always recommended.

The 70 Per Cent Rule

The pilot hole should be drilled to approximately 70 per cent of the screw shank diameter. This leaves enough wood fibre for the thread to bite into, while removing enough material to prevent splitting.

Hardwood Tip

In very dense hardwoods such as oak or ash, also drill a clearance hole through the top piece of timber. This lets the screw shank pass through freely, so the thread only bites in the receiving timber. Without this, the top board can split or the two pieces may not be drawn tightly together.


Step-by-Step: How to Fix Wood with a Woodscrew

Follow these steps for a clean, professional result every time. The process applies whether you are fixing skirting boards, assembling a cabinet, or attaching a piece of structural timber.

Mark and measure your fixing point
Accuracy at this stage saves time later

Use a pencil and a try square or tape measure to mark exactly where you want the screw. For multiple fixings, mark them all before you start drilling. Consistent spacing gives a neater result and ensures even load distribution across the joint.

Select the correct drill bit and drill the pilot hole

Fit a twist drill bit to your drill. The bit diameter should be approximately 70 per cent of your screw shank diameter. Drill straight down at 90 degrees to the surface. Keep the drill steady and withdraw the bit cleanly to avoid the hole widening at the surface.

In hardwood, you may also need a countersink bit to create a chamfered seat for the screw head, especially if the head does not have self-embedding ribs.

Match bit size to drive format

Choose your screw based on the diameter and length guidance earlier in this guide. Fit the correct driver bit to your drill or impact driver. A PZ2 bit fits most 4mm and 5mm Pozi screws. Place the screw tip into the pilot hole. Keep the drill perpendicular to the surface. Start at a low speed until the thread bites, then increase speed steadily. Ease off as the head approaches the surface to avoid over-driving, which can crack timber or strip the thread.

With an impact driver, use a lower torque setting for smaller screws and work up only as needed. Impact drivers are powerful and over-driving a 3.5mm screw in softwood takes only a second of inattention.

Check the head is flush, then fill if needed
The finishing step

Run your fingertip over the screw head. A properly driven countersunk screw should sit flush with or very slightly below the timber surface. If it is proud, give it one or two more turns by hand with a manual screwdriver to avoid over-driving.

For a paintable finish, apply a wood filler or interior filler over the head, allow it to dry, and sand flush. For a natural timber finish, a wooden plug cut from matching timber looks far neater than filler.

Splitting Risk
