Why Coating Matters for Outdoor Screws

Most screws are made from steel. Steel rusts. When a screw rusts outdoors, it does not just weaken. It stains the surrounding timber with rust bleed. It expands as it corrodes, which can split the wood. And it loses pull-out strength over time, which matters on decking, fencing, and structural timber work.

The coating on a screw is its only line of defence against moisture, oxygen, and the chemicals in treated timber. Choose the wrong coating and the screw will fail well before the timber does.

In the UK, outdoor timber is exposed to rain, frost, humidity, and temperature swings throughout the year. These conditions demand a coating that is rated for genuine outdoor use, not just a light coating that looks similar on the shelf.

Bright Zinc Plated Screws: Why They Fail Outdoors

Bright zinc plated (BZP) screws are the most common general-purpose screw sold in the UK. You will find them in most mixed tubs, most budget ranges, and most DIY shed shelves. They look similar to outdoor-rated screws. They are not.

The zinc coating on a BZP screw is applied by electroplating. This produces a very thin layer of zinc over the steel. That thin layer is adequate for dry indoor use. It is not adequate for outdoor exposure.

In outdoor conditions, the zinc layer will begin to break down. Once it does, the steel underneath is exposed to moisture. Rust follows quickly. In the UK, BZP screws used outdoors can start to corrode within 12 to 24 months.

Do Not Use BZP Screws with Treated Timber

Modern pressure-treated and tanalised timber contains copper-based preservatives. These chemicals react with the thin zinc coating on BZP screws. This reaction speeds up corrosion significantly and can cause black staining around the screw head. Always use stainless or hot-dip galvanised fixings with any treated timber.

The risk with BZP screws in outdoor structural work is that the corrosion is often invisible. The screw sits inside the timber. By the time you see rust staining at the surface, the shank may already have lost a significant amount of its cross-section. For decking and fencing, this is a genuine structural concern.

Yellow passivated screws (sometimes called yellow zinc or gold screws) have slightly better corrosion resistance than plain bright zinc. They are a step up, but they are still not rated for long-term outdoor exposure. They are better suited to covered outdoor areas or damp indoor applications.

Hot-dip galvanised (HDG) screws are coated by submerging the steel in molten zinc. This creates a much thicker zinc layer than electroplating. The result is a heavier, more durable coating that provides significantly better corrosion resistance outdoors.

Hot-dip galvanised screws are a practical choice for structural outdoor timber work. They are commonly used in decking frames, fence posts, outdoor joinery, and landscaping structures where the fixing needs to last for many years in exposed conditions.

In the UK, for domestic decking frames and outdoor structural timber, hot-dip galvanised is widely accepted as a minimum for structural connections. Stainless steel is the better option where corrosion resistance is the priority.

Hot-dip galvanised is a good choice for structural outdoor timber work in inland locations. Use it for decking subframes, fence posts, pergola frames, and garden structures where a practical, cost-effective outdoor coating is needed and the environment is not coastal or heavily exposed to salt.

For coastal builds, step up to A4 stainless steel. For applications where staining or appearance matters, use stainless steel rather than galvanised.


A2 Stainless Steel Screws

A2 stainless steel is the grade most people mean when they say stainless steel. It is also known as grade 304. It is the most widely used stainless steel in UK trade and DIY fixings.

Stainless steel resists corrosion differently to zinc-coated screws. It does not rely on a surface coating. The steel alloy itself contains chromium, which reacts with oxygen to form a thin, self-repairing protective layer on the surface. This layer prevents moisture and oxygen from reaching the iron in the steel. The result is long-lasting corrosion resistance that does not peel, chip, or wear away.

A2 stainless screws are well suited to most UK outdoor timber applications. Exterior green organic coated screws are engineered specifically for outdoor timber. The green finish is a multi-layer coating that includes a zinc base with an organic polymer top coat. This system is designed to resist corrosion in exposed outdoor conditions and to be chemically compatible with pressure-treated and tanalised timber.

This type of screw is the standard choice for decking in the UK trade market. The green coating will not react with the copper-based preservatives in modern treated timber the way that plain zinc coatings do. If you are unsure, default to A2 stainless for outdoor timber fixing inland, and A4 stainless for anything near the coast. Both are compatible with treated timber and will not cause staining. The cost difference is modest compared to the cost of replacing a failed fixing in a completed deck or fence.


Which Coating to Use with Treated and Tanalised Timber

Treated and tanalised timber is standard for outdoor use in the UK. It has been pressure-impregnated with preservatives to protect it from rot and insect attack. The most common preservatives used today are copper-based. These include ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) and copper azole.

The copper compounds in treated timber are corrosive to standard steel fixings. They react particularly aggressively with thin zinc coatings. This is why standard bright zinc plated screws corrode so quickly when used with tanalised timber, even in covered structures.

The chemical reaction accelerates the breakdown of the zinc layer. This leaves the base steel exposed much sooner than it would be in untreated timber. The result is early corrosion, rust staining, and in structural connections, loss of fixing strength.
