What Is a Wood Screw and How Does It Work?

A wood screw is a threaded fastener designed to grip timber fibres. As the screw turns, its thread cuts into the wood and pulls the joint together.

Wood screws have a tapered, pointed tip. This helps them start easily without wandering. The thread grips the timber as the screw is driven in. The head then seats itself at the surface to hold the joint tight.

Unlike bolts, wood screws cut their own thread. They do not need a separate nut. This makes them quick to use and well suited to timber joinery, furniture, decking, and general building work.

The words "screw" and "fixing" are sometimes used interchangeably. In this guide, a fixing refers to the complete method of joining two pieces of material. The screw is the fastener that does the work.


Types of Wood Screw Fixings

Not all wood screws are the same. Different designs suit different jobs. Here are the main types you will come across.

Thread Type: Full Thread vs Partial Thread

The thread is the part of the screw that grips the timber. The pattern, depth, and length of the thread all affect how well the fixing holds.

Full Thread

A fully threaded screw has thread running almost from the tip to the head. The thread grips along the full length of the screw in the timber.

Full thread screws are good for fixing into a single piece of material. They are common in chipboard screws and some structural fixings.

Partial Thread

A partly threaded screw has a plain, unthreaded shank between the head and the threaded section. The thread only grips in the deeper piece of timber. The plain shank passes through the first piece without gripping.

This design is important when you need to pull two pieces of timber tightly together. If the thread grips both pieces, it can hold them apart rather than drawing them tight. A partial thread screw pulls the joint closed properly.

Which Thread Should You Use?

Use a full thread screw when fixing a single piece of material. Use a partial thread screw when joining two pieces of timber together, so the joint pulls tight.

Twin Thread and Single Thread

Many modern woodscrews use a twin thread design. Two thread flights run up the shank together. This gives faster driving, better grip, and less splitting than an old-style single thread screw of the same gauge.

Tip

Check the product description when buying. Most premium woodscrews sold in the UK today use a twin thread design. It makes a real difference to driving speed and holding strength.


Head Type: Countersunk, Pan Head, and Others

The head of the screw controls how it sits at the surface. It also affects the look of the finished work. Choosing the wrong head type can leave an ugly finish or cause the screw to pull through thin material.

Head
The most common wood screw head. The cone-shaped underside sinks flush with or below the timber surface. Use it for wood-to-wood joints, furniture, shelving, and any project where you want a smooth or fillable finish. A double countersunk head seats more cleanly in softwood without pre-drilling a recess.
Pan Head
Head
A flat underside that sits proud of the surface. Use it when fixing brackets, hinges, or metal hardware to timber. The flat bearing surface holds the fitting down without pulling through thin metal. Do not use a pan head where you need a flush finish.
Bugle Head
Head
A curved underside that eases the screw into the surface. Common on drywall and collated screws. The curved profile reduces tearing as the head enters the material.
Hex Head
Head
A six-sided head driven with a spanner or socket. Used on structural timber screws and coach screws where high torque is needed. Not designed to sit flush with the surface.

Drive Type: Pozi, Torx, Phillips, and Slotted

The drive is the recess in the head of the screw. Your driver bit must match the drive type or the bit will slip and damage the screw head.

Pozi (PZ) A cross-shaped recess with additional angled lines. PZ2 is the standard size for most UK woodscrews. The most common drive in UK woodscrews. Works well with a hand drill or impact driver.
Torx (TX / Star) A six-pointed star shape. Provides a very positive engagement and high torque transfer. Structural screws, decking screws, and premium woodscrews where cam-out needs to be avoided.
Phillips (PH) A plain cross shape. Looks similar to Pozi but the recesses are at 90 degrees. The two are not fully interchangeable. Less common on modern UK woodscrews. Still found on some older stock and imported fixings.
Slotted A single straight slot. Requires a flat-head screwdriver. Rarely used in modern timber work. Found on some decorative or traditional ironmongery screws.
Pozi and Phillips Are Not the Same

Using a Phillips bit in a Pozi screw, or vice versa, will round off the drive recess. Always check the drive type before you start. PZ2 Pozi is the standard for most UK woodscrews.


How to Choose the Right Screw Length

Screw length is one of the most important decisions. A screw that is too short will not grip properly. A screw that is too long can break through the surface on the other side.

General Rule for Screw Length

As a starting point, the screw should penetrate the second piece of material by at least twice the thickness of the first piece. For example, if you are fixing a 20mm batten, the screw should go at least 40mm into the timber behind it. Choose a screw of at least 60mm total length.

Light joinery, furniture, and shelving fixings. Suitable for joining thinner boards or fixing shelf brackets to timber. Check penetration depth against the material thickness before choosing.

Standard decking boards to joists. A 4.5 x 60mm screw is a common specification for 25mm softwood decking boards into treated timber joists.

Tip

When in doubt, test on an offcut first. Drive the screw and check the tip does not break through the back of the timber. Also check the head seats correctly at the surface.


Screw Diameter and Gauge

The diameter of the screw affects how strong the fixing is and how likely the timber is to split.

A wider screw gives more holding power but puts more pressure on the surrounding timber. A narrower screw is easier to drive and less likely to split the wood, but it will not carry as much load.

Screw sizes 6, 8, and 10 (old imperial gauge) are also widely used as references in the UK. Size 6 is roughly 3.5mm, size 8 is roughly 4.0mm to 4.2mm, and size 10 is roughly 4.8mm to 5.0mm.


Coatings and Materials: Indoor vs Outdoor

The coating on a screw determines how long it will last in its environment. Using the wrong coating outdoors or in treated timber is a common mistake that shortens the life of the whole project.

BZP
For dry, indoor use only. Bright zinc plate is a basic corrosion barrier. It is not suitable for outdoor exposure, treated timber, or damp environments. It will corrode and stain the timber over time in any outdoor application.
Yellow Zinc
YZP
General indoor use. Yellow passivated zinc gives slightly better corrosion resistance than bright zinc. Still not suitable for outdoor or treated timber applications.
Organic Coat
Green/Grey
Good for outdoor and treated timber. A polymer or organic coating gives strong protection in external conditions. Often used on decking screws. Check the product specification for compatibility with the timber treatment being used.
A2 Stainless
304 Grade
The standard for outdoor timber fixings. A2 stainless steel resists rust well and is suitable for most outdoor applications including decking, fencing, and garden structures. It is the minimum recommended grade for external wood fixings in most UK conditions.
A4 Stainless
316 Grade
Marine and coastal grade. A4 stainless provides the highest level of corrosion resistance. Recommended for coastal locations, marine environments, and projects using timber treated with chemicals that can accelerate corrosion.
Treated Timber Needs the Right Coating

Modern pressure-treated timber contains copper compounds. These can react with standard zinc plating and accelerate corrosion. Always use A2 stainless, A4 stainless, or a compatible organic-coated screw in treated or tanalised timber. Do not assume that bright zinc plate is suitable just because the timber looks dry.


Matching the Screw to the Timber

The same screw does not work equally well in every timber. The density, moisture content, and structure of the wood all affect how a screw behaves.

Softwood

Common softwoods in UK DIY include pine, spruce, and treated construction timber. Softwood is less dense and easier to drive a screw into. In most cases, a suitable modern woodscrew can be driven without a pilot hole in softwood.

Take care near board ends and edges. There is less surrounding timber to resist splitting, so pre-drilling is advisable in these positions.

Hardwood

Hardwoods such as oak, iroko, and ipe are denser and less forgiving. They resist the screw more strongly. Pre-drilling is normally recommended in hardwood to reduce splitting risk and to help the screw drive cleanly. Use A2 stainless as a minimum coating for hardwood decking and outdoor joinery.

MDF and Chipboard

Manufactured boards like MDF and chipboard need a dedicated chipboard screw with a thin shank and deep thread. The thin shank reduces the risk of the board splitting or crumbling. Always pre-drill near edges and ends of MDF sheets, as they are prone to splitting under pressure.

Treated Timber

Pressure-treated timber is the standard choice for outdoor structures in the UK. The treatment chemistry can be corrosive to standard zinc-plated screws over time. Use A2 stainless or a compatible coated screw in all treated timber applications.

Tip

If you are unsure about the timber density or the right screw size, test on a spare offcut before working on the finished piece. This is especially useful with hardwood or very dry reclaimed timber.


When to Drill a Pilot Hole

A pilot hole is a small hole drilled into the timber before the screw is driven. It creates space for the screw shank and reduces the pressure that builds up around the fixing.

Without a pilot hole in dense or dry timber, the screw acts like a wedge. It forces the timber fibres apart. This can split the wood, especially near board ends and edges where there is less material holding things together.

When a Pilot Hole Helps Most

  • Fixing into hardwood at any position
  • Fixing near the end or edge of any board
  • Working with dry or brittle timber
  • Using a large-diameter screw in softwood
  • Fixing into MDF or chipboard near edges

Pilot Hole Size

The pilot hole should match the inner core diameter of the screw, not the outer thread diameter. If the hole is the same size as the thread, the threads cannot grip. Follow the screw manufacturer's guidance where a specific size is stated.

A Pilot Hole That Is Too Wide Will Not Hold

An oversized pilot hole removes the timber that the thread needs to grip. If the hole is too wide, the screw will spin without pulling the joint together. Test the correct size on an offcut first.

How to Fix Wood with a Screw: The Right Process

Getting the right screw is only part of the job. Driving it correctly makes the difference between a strong joint and a failed one.

Choose the correct screw

Match the diameter, length, thread type, head, drive, and coating to the timber type, joint, and environment. Check the sections above if you are unsure.

Mark the fixing position

Use a pencil or marking awl to mark exactly where the screw will go. Mark all positions before drilling. Keep fixings at least 20mm from board ends and a sensible distance in from edges to reduce splitting risk.
