Wood Screws vs Self-Tapping Screws: What's the Difference?
A wood screw is designed specifically for timber. It has a coarse, sharp thread and a tapered tip that grips timber fibres. A self-tapping screw is a broader term for any screw that cuts its own thread as it is driven in. Self-tapping screws are used in metal, plastic, and other materials as well as wood. The two are not interchangeable in most applications.
What Is a Wood Screw?

A wood screw is a threaded fastener built for timber. It has a sharp, tapered point that starts easily without slipping. The thread is coarse and widely spaced. This lets the screw cut into the timber fibres and grip them firmly as it is driven in.
The head of a wood screw is designed to sit flush with, or just below, the timber surface. The most common head type in the UK is countersunk. The most common drive is PZ2 Pozi.
Wood screws are used for everyday joinery, furniture, shelving, decking, fencing, and structural timber work. They are the standard fixing for wood-to-wood joints across the trade and DIY market.
Many modern UK woodscrews use a twin thread design. Two thread flights run up the shank at the same time. This gives faster driving, better grip, and reduces the risk of splitting compared to an older single thread screw of the same diameter.
What Is a Self-Tapping Screw?

A self-tapping screw cuts its own thread as it is driven into a material. It does not need a pre-tapped hole. The thread on the screw forms the thread in the material as the screw turns.
The term "self-tapping" covers a wide range of screw types. Self-tapping screws are used in thin sheet metal, plastic, composite materials, and some timber applications. They are common in construction, HVAC work, automotive assembly, and electrical installations.
Self-tapping screws usually need a pilot hole first. The pilot hole gives the screw somewhere to start. The screw then cuts its own thread into the surrounding material as it goes in. Without a correctly sized pilot hole, the material may crack or the screw may not engage properly.
A self-tapping screw cuts threads but still needs a pre-drilled hole to start. A self-drilling screw has a drill bit tip that creates its own hole and then taps its own thread in one step. These are two different things. See Section 8 of this guide for more detail.

If the label says "woodscrew" it is designed for timber. If it says "self-tapping" without any further description, check the product specification before using it in timber. Some self-tapping screws work well in wood. Others do not grip timber fibres well enough for a reliable joint.
How the Thread Design Differs
The thread is the most important difference between the two screw types. It affects how well the screw grips, how easy it is to drive, and how likely the material is to split or strip.
Tip Design: What to Look For
The tip of a screw controls how it starts and how easily it enters the material. The tip design is one of the clearest visual differences between a wood screw and a self-tapping screw.
Can You Use a Self-Tapping Screw in Wood?

Yes. A self-tapping screw can be used in timber, but it is not always the right choice.
In softer materials like pine or general construction timber, a self-tapping screw will enter the wood and hold reasonably well in many situations. For quick repairs or temporary fixings, this may be acceptable.
However, a dedicated wood screw will generally outperform a self-tapping screw in timber. Here is why.
- The coarser thread on a wood screw grips timber fibres more effectively than the finer thread of a self-tapping screw.
- A wood screw is less likely to strip its thread in the wood because more material sits between each thread turn.
- Wood screws are available in partial thread versions for drawing joints tight. Most self-tapping screws are fully threaded, which can prevent the joint from closing.
- Wood screws are available in the coatings and lengths most suited to UK timber applications, including A2 stainless for outdoor and treated timber.
- Self-tapping screws designed for sheet metal have a thread pitch that does not suit the density of most timbers.
The most common legitimate case is fixing timber to a metal frame or substrate. A screw with a winged self-tapping point can pass through a timber board and then engage with a steel section. The wings ream the timber hole wider so the thread only grips the metal. Once the wings break off at the metal face, the timber is drawn down tight against the steel. This is different from simply using a self-tapping screw as a substitute woodscrew.
When to Use a Wood Screw vs a Self-Tapping Screw

Self-Tapping vs Self-Drilling: Another Common Mix-Up
The terms "self-tapping" and "self-drilling" are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not.
Understanding the difference matters. Using the wrong type wastes time and can damage the material.
If you pick up a screw from a tray and are not sure what type it is, look at the tip. A sharp taper is a woodscrew or basic self-tapper. A flat or blunt tip is a self-tapper that needs a pre-drilled hole. A fluted, drill bit shaped tip is a self-drilling screw. Using the wrong type risks breaking the screw, stripping the hole, or cracking the material.
Common Mistakes When Choosing Between the Two
Most problems come from picking the wrong screw type for the material, or assuming that one type can cover all applications. Here are the mistakes that come up most often.

Using a self-tapping sheet metal screw in timber The finer thread of a sheet metal self-tapping screw does not grip wood fibres well. The holding power is lower. The screw is more likely to strip in the wood over time. Use a dedicated woodscrew instead.
