Not always. If you are using a suitable self-drilling screw through ordinary softwood and into steel, the screw may be designed to make its own path without a separate pilot hole.

When Can You Use a Tek Screw Without Pre-Drilling?

Tek screws are self-drilling fasteners. Their point is shaped to cut into suitable metal while the screw is being driven.

When a screw is made for timber-to-steel fixing, it may be able to pass through ordinary softwood before its drill point reaches the metal. In that case, you may not need to drill a separate pilot hole through the timber.

Some specialist timber-to-steel self-drilling screws also have small wings near the drill point. These wings open a wider path through the timber. They then break away when they reach the steel. The drill point continues through the metal and the thread engages with it.

This helps the timber sit tightly against the steel without the thread gripping the timber too early.

How to Pre-Drill Wood Before Using a Screw

If your timber needs pre-drilling, follow these simple steps.

Check the screw instructions

Confirm the screw is suitable for the timber and the material behind it. If you are fixing into steel, check the stated drilling capacity as well.

Mark where the screw needs to enter. Make sure the fixing will land in the correct part of the steel or supporting timber behind the board.

If the timber looks dry, dense, brittle, or likely to split, pre-drill rather than forcing the screw directly into the wood.


What About Tek Screws and Treated Timber?

Treated timber needs extra care because both the condition of the wood and the corrosion resistance of the fixing matter.

Treated timber that has dried after storage can become harder and more prone to splitting. A pilot hole can help when fixing close to board ends or into dense and dry material.

You should also choose a screw that is suitable for the timber treatment and exposure conditions.
