What Is a Self-Drilling Tek Screw?

A tek screw is a self-drilling fastener. It has a drill-like tip at the point end. This tip cuts through the material as you drive the screw, removing the need to pre-drill a pilot hole first.

The tip drills, the thread taps, and the screw fixes. All three steps happen at once. This makes tek screws a fast and efficient choice for fixing timber to metal frames, steel studs, and steel purlins.

The term "tek screw" originally came from a brand name. It is now used as a general term across the industry for all self-drilling screws of this type.

Tek screws are not the same as standard woodscrews. They are designed primarily for timber-to-metal fixing, not timber-to-timber. For pure wood-to-wood joints, a dedicated woodscrew gives a better result.


What You Need Before You Start

Getting everything ready before you begin saves time on site. Here is what you need for a standard timber-to-metal fix.

  • The correct tek screws: Match the drill point number to your steel thickness. Use stainless steel for outdoor work.
  • A power drill or screwdriver: A variable-speed drill works best. An impact driver can be used but requires care on thin sheet steel.
  • A hex socket or PH2 bit: Hex head tek screws take a magnetic hex socket. Pan head or countersunk types use a PH2 Phillips bit. Check your screw head type first.
  • Clamps or a helper: Timber can shift as you drive the screw. Clamp it or have someone hold it steady.
  • A tape measure and pencil: Mark your fixing points before drilling. This keeps screws evenly spaced and in a straight line.
  • Safety glasses: Metal swarf is produced as the point drills through. Always protect your eyes.

When a tek screw drills through steel, it creates metal shavings called swarf. These can be sharp and can travel at speed. Always wear appropriate eye protection before starting.


Choosing the Right Tek Screw

Not every tek screw is the same. You need to match the screw to your material and your project type. Three things matter most: the material the screw is made from, the length, and the drill point number.

Material: Stainless Steel or Zinc Plated?

For any outdoor project, always choose stainless steel. Zinc plated tek screws are cheaper but the coating wears away in wet conditions. Once the zinc is gone, the steel underneath rusts. That rust then stains the timber around it.

Stainless steel resists corrosion throughout the full body of the screw, not just on the surface. Grade A2 stainless steel suits most outdoor UK projects. Grade A4 is the right choice for coastal locations where salt air is present.

Length: How Long Should the Screw Be?

The screw needs to pass through the timber and into the steel section beneath. As a general rule, the screw should engage with at least three full threads into the steel after passing through the timber.

Measure the timber thickness. Add the thickness of the steel section. Then choose a screw length that covers both, with a small amount of thread showing at the far side of thinner steel.

When in doubt, choose a screw slightly longer than your minimum calculation. A screw that goes a little deeper is stronger than one that barely reaches the steel.


Understanding Drill Point Numbers

Tek screws come with different drill point sizes. These are numbered, and the number tells you how thick a piece of steel the screw can drill through without snapping or burning out the tip.

The higher the number, the longer the drill point, and the thicker the steel it can handle. Choosing the wrong point for your steel thickness is one of the most common mistakes on site.

If the drill point is too small for the steel thickness, it will overheat and burn out before breaking through. The screw will then spin without fixing. Always confirm the steel gauge before ordering your screws.


Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Follow these steps in order. Each one builds on the last. Skipping steps is where most installation problems begin.

Mark your fixing positions

Use a tape measure and pencil to mark where each screw will go. Keep your fixings evenly spaced and in a straight line. For decking and cladding, this also helps the finished job look neat. Mark both the timber and the steel section beneath so you know everything lines up before you start driving.

Position and clamp the timber

Place the timber onto the steel section. Hold it firmly or clamp it in position. Timber must not be able to move while you are driving the screw. If it shifts during installation, the screw may go in at an angle, which weakens the joint. A second pair of hands is helpful here on long boards.

Fit the correct bit to your drill

Hex head tek screws use a magnetic hex socket driver. Pan head and countersunk tek screws use a PH2 Phillips bit. Make sure the bit is fully seated and secure before you start. A loose bit will cam out of the screw head and damage the drive recess, making the screw very difficult to remove later.

Position the screw at 90 degrees

Hold the drill so the screw tip sits directly on your marked point. The screw must be at a right angle to the surface. If the screw goes in at an angle, the thread will not pull the timber tightly against the steel. It also weakens the holding strength of the fixing. Take a moment to check your angle before you start driving.

Apply steady pressure and start at medium speed

Press the tip firmly against the timber surface. Start the drill at medium speed. Do not run the drill at full speed from the start. The drill point needs time to bite into the timber and then start cutting through the steel beneath. A controlled, steady speed gives the point the best chance of cutting cleanly without overheating.

Let the drill point do the work through the steel

You will feel a change in resistance when the tip reaches the steel beneath the timber. This is normal. Maintain steady pressure and keep the speed consistent. The drill point will cut through and the thread will begin to engage with the steel. Do not push harder to force it through. Forcing the screw can burn out the drill point or snap the screw shaft.

Stop when the head is flush

As the screw pulls the timber down against the steel, reduce speed. Stop driving when the screw head sits flush with, or just below, the timber surface. For hex head tek screws with EPDM washers, stop when the washer is lightly compressed. Do not overtighten. Overtightening strips the thread in the steel or pulls the head through the timber.

Check the fixing

Once the screw is home, check that the timber is sitting tightly against the steel with no gap. A gap means the screw has not fully pulled the materials together. This can happen if the timber shifted during driving, or if the screw is too short. If there is a gap, remove the screw, reposition the timber, and try again with the same hole or move to a new fixing point nearby.

Drive Speed and Pressure: Getting It Right

Speed is the thing most people get wrong with tek screws. Running the drill too fast is the single most common cause of burnt-out tips, stripped heads, and failed fixings.

A variable-speed drill gives you the most control. An impact driver can work for timber-to-steel fixing but the hammering action adds force that can dimple or deform lightweight steel sheets. For thin gauge steel, a clutch-controlled drill is a safer choice.

If you smell burning or see smoke while driving, stop immediately. This means the drill point is overheating in the steel. Allow the screw to cool for a few seconds before continuing. Reduce speed on your next screw.


Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the most frequent problems that appear on site. Most are easy to prevent once you know what to look for.

Outdoor Use and Material Choice

Most timber-to-steel fixing jobs in the UK happen outdoors. Decking subframes are fixed to steel posts or beams. Cladding battens are screwed to steel-framed walls. Fencing boards are attached to steel or box-section posts.

In all of these situations, the screws are exposed to rain, humidity, and in some cases, treated timber. Each of these conditions creates a problem for zinc plated tek screws.

Stainless steel is the correct choice for all outdoor timber-to-metal fixing in the UK. A2 grade suits most applications. A4 grade adds extra protection against salt and chloride, making it the right choice for coastal projects.

Most outdoor timber in the UK is pressure treated with copper-based preservatives. These preservatives react chemically with zinc coatings. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pre-drill a hole before using a tek screw?
In most timber-to-metal applications, no. The self-drilling point cuts through both the timber and the steel in one action. However, in very dense or dry hardwood close to the edge of a board, a small pilot hole in the timber only can help prevent splitting. You do not need to pre-drill the steel.
Can I use an impact driver for tek screws?
Yes, but with care. An impact driver works well for heavier gauge steel where more torque is needed. For thin sheet steel, the hammering action can dent or dimple the metal around the fixing point. A clutch-controlled variable-speed drill gives better results in most timber-to-light-steel applications.
Why is my tek screw spinning without going in?
This usually means the drill point has overheated and failed to cut through the steel. It can also mean the drill point number is too low for the steel thickness you are working with. Countersunk tek screws sit flush with the timber surface, which gives a neater appearance on decking and visible boarding. Choose based on the finish you need and whether a watertight seal is required.
How many tek screws do I need per board?
This depends on the board width, the load it carries, and your project specifications. As a general guide, fix at every joist or steel section crossing. For decking boards up to 150mm wide, one screw per crossing point is typical. For wider boards or structural applications, two screws per crossing point gives better pull-down and prevents board cupping.
