How Each Coating Works

The key difference between these two products is not the shape of the screw. It is what the screw is made from, and how it handles moisture over time.

Zinc plated screws are made from carbon steel. A thin layer of zinc is applied to the surface through electroplating. This zinc layer acts as a physical barrier between the steel and moisture in the air.

Zinc does corrode, but it does so slowly. That process protects the steel underneath for a period of time. The problem is that the coating is thin. Once it wears away or is scratched during installation, the bare steel beneath starts to rust.

  • Zinc plated tek screws: not suitable. Salt air will break down the coating rapidly, often within a single season.
  • A2 stainless steel (grade 304): suitable for most coastal projects that are not in direct, regular contact with sea spray.
  • A4 stainless steel (grade 316): the correct choice for marine environments, harbours, waterfront structures, and anywhere sea spray is a regular presence.

The difference between A2 and A4 comes down to one element. A4 contains molybdenum, which gives added resistance to chlorides. It is the industry standard for marine construction for this reason.

Preventing Timber Staining

As the zinc coating breaks down and the steel beneath corrodes, rust-coloured water runs down the face of the timber. On natural wood, this leaves brown or orange streaks.
